Im Klartext: Es ist eine Sammlung von Programmen mit denen man eine sogenannte Windows PE (=Preinstall Environment) Umgebung und eine Datei zur automatischen Installation basteln kann. In besagter Datei kann man alle Setup Parameter einstellen und zusätzliche Dinge bei der Installation von Windows durch das Setup automatisch durchführen lassen, also eine sog. unbeaufsichtigte Installation. Windows PE dient dann dazu, mit ImageX von dieser Installation eine Image Datei im WIM Format anzulegen und dieses später auf andere PCs zu übertragen.
Kurz gesagt: Das WAIK dient dazu eine vordefinierte Windows Installation auf viele PCs identischen Typs schnell zu kopieren.

Windows PE ist seit Windows Vista Basis für jeden Windowsinstallationsprozess. Auch beim Server 2003-basierten Windows Home Server.
